Use Powershell to preview the list of members of a dynamic distribution group (with Filter)

Usually you see an example like this:

$DynamicGroup = Get-DynamicDistributionGroup “MyGroup”

Get-Recipient -RecipientPreviewFilter $DynamicGroup.RecipientFilter

But that does not work (returns more users than expected) when you filter your dynamic distribution group members also by an OU as shown in the Picture below

dynamicdistributiongroupfilter

In this case you need to alter the Get-Recipient commandlet by adding a parameter -OrganizationalUnit

$DynamicGroup = Get-DynamicDistributionGroup “MyGroup”

Get-Recipient -RecipientPreviewFilter $DynamicGroup.RecipientFilter  -OrganizationalUnit $DynamicGroup.RecipientContainer

Question: Please can you explain to me why this does not work?

Get-Recipient -RecipientPreviewFilter (Get-DynamicDistributionGroup “MyGroup”).RecipientFilter

namely, why this returns nothing?

(Get-DynamicDistributionGroup “MyGroup”).RecipientFilter
