Solution that worked for me: granting Contribute permissions to the aforementioned user in the hidden Taxonomy list, which can be browsed by adding this

Lists/TaxonomyHiddenList/

to the end of your Site Collection URL

BTW: Everyone had Read perrmissions on the list by default
