Creating SQL server alias

  1. Run SQL Server configuration manager, in SQL Server Network configuration enable TCP/IP
    sql server configuration manager
  2. Enable TCPIP protocol – just select Yes from the dropdown
    enable tcp ip
  3. Make sure SQLBrowser service is set to Automatic startup and is running
  4. In SQL Native Client create new alias (Alias Name = what you want the “virtual” instance to be named, leave PortNo blank, Protocol = TCP/IP, Server = the existing instance to which the alias points)new_alias
