Creating SQL server alias
- Run SQL Server configuration manager, in SQL Server Network configuration enable TCP/IP
- Enable TCPIP protocol – just select Yes from the dropdown
- Make sure SQLBrowser service is set to Automatic startup and is running
- In SQL Native Client create new alias (Alias Name = what you want the “virtual” instance to be named, leave PortNo blank, Protocol = TCP/IP, Server = the existing instance to which the alias points)
